The Bagion Hotel is located on Omonia Square, the oldest square in Athens, which until 1930 was the center of the secular life and commercial traffic of the city. The four-storey listed building of the historic hotel is an excellent example of urban architecture of Athens which dates back to the end of the 19th century and is the work of the architect Ernst Ziller, built between the years 1890-1894 following a donation by Ioannis Bagas.
At that point there used to be a house, in which the family of Harilaos Trikoupis lived, until 1883. The construction of Baggiou, in a way, inaugurated a new era for Athenian hotels, in terms of size, internal arrangement and external form. A key new element is the existence of the glass atrium, a particularly original construction for its time.
The Hotel originally had three floors and the fourth floor was added at the beginning of the 20th century. Unlike most of the hotels in the wider area of Omonia, which declined after the war, the "Bageion Hotel" showed a remarkable resilience, as it was still operating at least until 1969 - but as a 3rd class.
The hotel housed a café-deli in its basement with patrons from all walks of life, who found there freedom from the conservatism of the time.
In the early 1920s, Bagion turned into a spiritual refuge for young writers: Mitsos Papanikolaou, Napoleon Lapathiotis, Tellos Agras, Minos Zotos, Nikos Saravas made it their home and turned it into one of the most important points of formation of the new literary generation of the period.
A development that did not garner the expected publicity is the fact that the Bagion Hotel housed the Mediterranean College from 1994 to 2002 and during those eight years significant efforts were made to revive and re-evaluate its old character.
Diamonds like this we must preserve, live and admire. There are very few left.
Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
